FREEPORT, Bahamas (March 18, 2023) – Each of the South Carolina Track & Field teams finished fourth to conclude the 2023 Island Relays Bahamas on Saturday afternoon in Freeport, Bahamas.
The men’s team corralled 125 total points, competing in 13 events on the final day. The Gamecocks picked up a trio of victories, resulting in 30 points. Anthony Greenhow, Jr. claimed the podium in the men’s 100-meter dash when he stopped the clock at 10.66. Rogerio Amaral also picked up a win on the track, running a personal-best 3:54.80 in the men’s 1500m. The final win for the men came in the 110-meter hurdle when Filip Demsar ran 14.15.
The Gamecocks also secured top three finishes in four different field events. Blair Brooks and Kobe Franklin each finished runner-up in their respective events, with Brooks jumping a personal-best 14.59m (47-10.5) in the triple jump and Franklin clearing 2.00m (6-6.75) in the high jump. Brooks also led the charge in the long jump, jumping 7.31m (23-11.75) for third overall. In the men’s shot put, veteran thrower Dylan Targgart tossed 18.57m (60-11) for a bronze finish.
Each of the men’s relay teams also secured top three finishes, with a pair earning runner-up medals. The men’s 4x400m team of Demsar, Greenhow, Jackson Junkins and Gatlin Lawson earned silver with a time of 3:11.58. Meanwhile, the 4x800m relay squad of Amaral, Aidan Hatton, Jack Mensch and Will Spencer clocked 7:53.21 for silver in the Bahamas. The final relay squad of B. Brooks, Demsar, Emory Floyd and Greenhow took bronze in the 4x100m relay following a time of 40.11.
The Gamecock women competed in seven events on the final day, coming away with 99 points overall for the meet. South Carolina earned a pair of wins on the final day, including the 4x800m relay team of Elena Kelety, Sylvia Chelangat, Kieley Gayle and Grace Zamrowski claiming the title with a time of 8:56.91 – the fifth fastest 4x800m in Gamecock history.
The final win for the Gamecocks belonged to Svenja Sommer, making her outdoor South Carolina debut. Sommer ran 4:35.25 in the 1500m to secure 10 points and claim gold in the event.
The Gamecocks return home for the first outdoor meet at the Sheila and Morris Cregger Track next weekend when Carolina hosts the Weems Baskin on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25.
