Relay Team Captures Crown to Close Out Aztec Invitational


SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Utah track & field team put a bow on its day at the Aztec Invitational by capturing the 4x400m relay crown with a school record time of 3:36.93 on Saturday at the Sports Deck on the campus of San Diego State.
 
Harley Daniel kicked things off for the Women of Utah on the track, running 14.27 in the 100m hurdles while teammate Rachel Whipple posted a mark of 15.37. Josefine Eriksen was the first Ute to record points, posting three points for Utah after finishing sixth-overall with a 54.02 in the 400m dash.
 
Sophomore Megan Rose narrowly beat out her previous PR in the 100m dash, leaning it out at the line for a time of 12.33.
 
Freshman Bri Rinn won her heat in the 800m run and third-overall to capture six points for Utah with a time of 2:11.05 in her first time running the event outdoor. Meanwhile, Erin Vringer opened her outdoor season with a 2:111.44 to take third in the same heat as Rinn and fifth overall and add four more points for the Utes. Millie Wilcox also made her outdoor debut and posted a mark of 2:12.11 to earn Utah another point on the day. Lauren Peterson was the fourth Ute to cross the finish line with a PR run of 2:12.63.
 
Over in the field events, Shana Van Elderen moved up one spot in the all-time record books with a leap of 12.19m (40-0) to win her heat and finish eighth-overall to give the Utes another point. Delaney Gates finished the long jump with a mark of 4.9m (16-1).
 
Dee Denis tacked on another eight points for the Utes in the 400m hurdles when she took second overall while Whipple checked in at 1:02.31. Over in the 200m dash, Maya LeBar was the first Utah racer to cross the finishing line – checking in with a run of 24.70. Kelise Davis was the next Ute to finish with a time of 25.42 while Rose recorded a new personal best time of 25.63.
 
However, it was Utah’s 4x400m relay team that saved the best for last, beating out USC to capture the crown and give Utah another 10 points with a school record-breaking run of 3:36.93 behind the legs of Denise, Daniel, Emily Martin and Eriksen. Utah’s “B” squad of Whipple, Davis, Wilcox and Jasie York also finished in the top-8, finishing with a mark of 3:54.51.

The Utes will head to the Farm next week for the Stanford Invitational (March 31 – April 1) before returning home to host the annual
