Duke Men’s Hammer Throw Record Falls on First Day of VertKlasse Meeting


HIGH POINT, N.C. – Graduate student Myles Schreck took down the Duke men’s hammer throw school record and classmate Jide Akinjisola also posted a top-five program mark in the event to headline a solid first day of competition for Duke track and field at the VertKlasse Meeting.
 
In addition to the pair of top-five program marks, the Blue Devils tallied six more top-five placements across the men’s and women’s long jump, women’s shot put and men’s high jump.
 
TOP PERFORMANCES

  • Jide Akinjisola and Myles Schreck kicked off the Friday events for Duke in the men’s hammer throw and set the tone for the day behind a pair of standout performances that culminated in top-five placements.
  • Schreck had the stoutest performance of the morning en route to logging a runner-up finish, coming through with a massive and season-best throw of 60.19m (197-5 feet) on his fourth attempt – catapulting four spots up to No. 1 all-time while shattering the previous seven-year-old record by two feet.
  • Akinjisola parlayed his fourth attempt into the farthest throw of his career as he tallied a toss of 58.95m (193-5 feet). The distance was good for fifth among the field and improved his No. 5 all-time program mark in the process.
  • Graduate student Joseph DiDario continued to build on his previous showings in the men’s javelin as he registered a personal-best performance on Friday. DiDario came through in the clutch on the sixth try and snatched the win via a throw of 65.06m (213-5 feet).
  • Sophomore Max Forte remained undefeated in the outdoor long jump with his third event win in as many meets. Forte’s lone jump was one no one else came close to surpassing and measured 7.54m (24-9 feet) – just .01 meter from tying his No. 3 program mark.
  • Also competing in the event was senior Ezra Mellinger who delivered his best jump of the event on the fifth try, flying out to a season best of 7.37m (24-2.50 feet).
  • Duke picked up two more third-place finishes in the men’s high jump ‘B’ and women’s long jump via senior Davis Howell and junior Brianna Smith.
  • Howell posted a clearance of 1.91m (6-3.25 feet) while Smith made her fifth jump her best, jumping 6.00m (19-8.25 feet).
  • Graduate student Lily Lockhart had a solid outing in the women’s shot put and turned in a fifth-place finish behind a 14.45m (47-5 feet) throw.
