WALNUT, Calif. – At the front of the parade of Huskies heading to SoCal this weekend were three Husky multi-eventers, and all three had impressive day ones of their two-day competitions at the Mt. SAC Relays. Ida Eikeng, Jami Schlueter, and Ollie Thorner all collected some personal-bests today at Hilmer-Lodge Stadium.
More than forty more Huskies will be joining the action over the next three days, at the Mt. SAC Relays, the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, and the Bryan Clay Invitational, but today belonged to the heptathletes and decathletes at Mt. SAC.
Eikeng, the school record-holder and three time First Team All-American, started the first heptathlon of her season today and had four straight strong events. She opened in the 100m hurdles, going 13.45, and then made 5-6 in the high jump. On her third attempt in the shot put, Eikeng set a new lifetime-best, going 48-4, breaking the PR she last set at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She then closed with the second-fastest 200-meters in the elite section, going 24.03, the second-fastest wind-legal time of her career.
Competing in a field that includes 2020 U.S. Olympian Annie Kunz and 2022 U.S. Pentathlon Champion Chari Hawkins, Eikeng sits fourth with 3,709 points.
In the men’s collegiate decathlon, Schluter and Thorner finished day one as the top two collegiate competitors, with Schlueter scoring 3,901 and Thorner scoring 3,853.
Schlueter began his day with a PR in the 100-meters, going 10.96, and Thorner ran 11.14. Schlueter then had a 23-3 1/4 long jump, an outdoor best and just an inch off his indoor PR set this year. Thorner had a leap of 22-2 ½. In the shot put, Schlueter tossed 44-3 ½ and Thorner went 42-9 ½. Thorner had a 6-3 ½ high jump and Schlueter cleared 6-2 ¼. Then both Dawgs finished with PRs in the 400-meter dash. Thorner clocked a 48.99 and Schlueter closed in 50.48.
The decathlon will resume tomorrow at 10 a.m. and the heptathlon will continue tomorrow at 11 a.m.
