Blue Devils Post Top-Five Program Marks in Women’s Hammer Throw


LONG BEACH, Calif. – Duke track and field completed the first day of its West Coast takeover, with Thursday’s competition slate highlighted by a pair of top five program marks in the women’s hammer throw at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
 
PACIFIC COAST INTERCOLLEGIATE

  • It was a big day in the women’s hammer throw for junior Moorea Mitchell and graduate student Jordyn Shubrick as the pair registered personal bests and updated the program record books.
  • Mitchell’s third attempt was her best throw of the afternoon, improving her No. 2 program mark in the event by launching the hammer 59.60m (195-6 feet) – almost a two meter personal best.
  • Shubrick moved up one spot to No. 4 all-time in program lore via her toss of 57.23m (187-9 feet) on her second throw.
  • Graduate student Robbie Otal also had a solid outing in the men’s discus, logging a fifth-place finish behind a measurement of 59.35m (194-8 feet) on his fourth throw of the competition.

 
BRYAN CLAY INVITATIONAL

  • Graduate students Sara Absten and Haley Rizek opened action at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday with the first four events of the women’s heptathlon. At the end of day one, Absten sits in fourth with 3,332 points while Rizek stands ninth with 3,181 points.
  • Absten’s performance on the first day of multis featured a pair of top five placements in the high jump and 200m dash. The Mount Vernon, Wash., product won the high jump via a leap of 1.67m (5-5.75 feet) while placing fifth in the 200m with a time of 25.04 seconds.
  • Rizek best showing came in the 200m as she notched a fourth-place finish after clocking 24.94 seconds.
