WALNUT, Calif. – Ida Eikeng continues to raise her standards, and raise the UW School Record along with them. Eikeng smashed her own heptathlon mark once again today at the Mt. SAC Relays, the fifth time she has broken a Husky Record. The three-time First Team All-American from Norway easily surpassed the 6,000-point mark for the first time, finishing with 6,100 total points in a stellar two-day, seven-event performance.
Last year’s NCAA runner-up in the heptathlon, Eikeng had twice scored over 5,900 points, but this week she was consistently near her best marks in the sprints, and had the two best throwing performances of her career. Yesterday, Eikeng had a shot put PR of 48-4 to win that event, and today she dominated the javelin with a career-best of 171-6, winning that event by 17-feet and by more than thirty feet over third-place.
She coupled that javelin win with a long jump mark of 19-4 and an 800-meters run of 2:31.82 for her final point total of 6,100, which will guarantee her a third trip to NCAA Outdoors. It also moves Eikeng up to No. 6 in Pac-12 history.
Another Husky moving up the multi records today was sophomore Jami Schlueter, who raised his decathlon PR by nearly three-hundred points at Mt. SAC. Schlueter finished his ten events with 7,427 points, the new No. 7 mark in school history. He opened the day running 14.64 in the 110m hurdles, then threw 125-8 in the discus. He then cleared 14-5 ¼ in the pole vault, and set a new javelin PR at 168-1. He closed things out running a time of 4:42.62 in the 1,500-meters.
Ollie Thorner was chasing a decathlon PR himself today but after running 15.46 in the hurdles and throwing 128-6 in the discus, Thorner missed his three tries at his opening pole vault height to knock him out of contention. But he still continued on to throw a solid 175-6 in the javelin, and then Thorner crushed the field in the 1,500-meters, winning by 13 seconds and setting a six-second PR in 4:18.73.
