AZUSA, Calif. — Making his Tennessee outdoor track debut late Thursday night in Azusa, California, UT graduate student Dylan Jacobs won the Bryan Clay Invitational men’s 10,000-meter run with a lifetime-best mark of 28:01.53, shattering the all-time program record in the process.
The Orland Park, Illinois, native stuck with the lead pack throughout the 25-lapper and used his signature kick over the final 200 meters to earn the victory, fending off Casey Clinger of BYU who crossed the line in 28:01.67. Jacobs’ mark ranks 34th on the 2023 world list, seventh in the NCAA this season and third among SEC runners at the 10k distance.
Additionally, Jacobs now holds the Cougar Athletic Stadium facility record and Bryan Clay Invitational meet record with his performance on Thursday.
Etching his name once again into the UT record books, Jacobs took down the 32-year-old Tennessee 10k school record of 28:18.4 set by two-time Olympian Todd Williams in 1991. In just one season on Rocky Top, Jacobs has established school records in the indoor 3,000-meter (7:36.89), indoor 5,000-meter (13:11.01) and outdoor 10,000-meter (28:01.53).
Action from the Bryan Clay Invitational continues Friday night with Joe Hoots and Will Mazur running the 800-meter at approximately 8:05 p.m. ET before a group of Vols and Lady Vols suit up for the 5k heats at Cougar Athletic Stadium, beginning with Knoxville native Callie Tucker at 10:40 p.m.
