This is Alekna’s sixth career Pac-12 weekly award.

Sophomore Owns Top-5 Collegiate Discus Throws In History

SAN FRANCISCO – After winning the Mt. SAC Relays elite discus section this past Saturday with the third-farthest throw in collegiate history, California track & field sophomore Mykolas Alekna has won the Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete of the Week award for the second straight time, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. It is the fourth conference honor for Cal athletes this season (Amari Turner, March 21; Tyler Burns, March 28).

The Golden Bears’ star discus specialist posted a best throw of 68.35m (224-3) on Saturday to outdo 14 other top-tier competitors and officially claim the top-five marks on the NCAA’s all-time list. This is the sixth career Pac-12 weekly award for Alekna, who was named the Pac-12 Men’s Field Athlete and Freshman of the Year as a rookie.

“We’ve been working on consistency and getting back into competition shape,” said assistant coach Mo Saatara, who leads the throws. “Mykolas has been very diligent and focused on building a base for the upcoming season. There are a lot of excellent throwers in our conference and in the NCAA this year, and we are looking forward to an exciting championship season.”

Alekna and the Bears will be back in action on April 29 at Edwards Stadium for the 127th Big Meet, a dual-meet clash between Cal and rival Stanford.
