NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s track and field team will close out its regular outdoor season at home when it hosts the Music City Challenge on Friday and Saturday.
Last weekend, the Dores split up to compete in three meets: the Indiana Invitational, the Virginia Challenge and the LSU Alumni Gold.
Vanderbilt’s throwers brought home three first-place finishes from the Indiana Invitational. Veronica Fraley, named this week’s SEC Co-Field Athlete of the Week, won the discus with a throw of 59.27 meters and the shot put with a personal-best toss of 17.33 meters, which is second in school history. Fraley ranks first in the SEC and fourth in the NCAA in the discus, and she ranks fourth in the SEC and 13th in the NCAA in the shot put thus far this season.
Giavonna Meeks won the hammer throw with a throw of 60.77 meters that reset the school record for the third meet in a row. At this point in the season, Meeks is the top-ranked true freshman in the NCAA and No. 1 U20 in the United States in the hammer throw.
Members of the men’s cross country team competed in the Indiana Invitational running the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters. Dylan Ballard, Max Beck, Philip Metcalf, Mathew Ragsdale and David Song are scheduled to compete again this weekend in Nashville.
In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the LSU Alumni Gold meet, Allyria McBride finished first among freshmen and 12th overall in the 400 meters, clocking 53.55 seconds, which is fourth in program history. Brooke Overholt’s name was entered onto the program’s all-time performer lists twice. She finished the 400 meters in 54.01 seconds, good for fifth in Vanderbilt history, and recorded a personal-best time of 24.05 seconds in the 200 meters, which is sixth in school history.
At the Virginia Challenge, Emma Curry, Cameron Fawcett and Julia Rosenberg turned in personal-best times in the 1,500 meters for the second meet in a row.
Looking toward this weekend’s meet, the Commodores hope to build on the marks they have established during the outdoor season in preparation for the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May.
