Alabama Concludes Regular Season at LSU Invitational

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Alabama track and field program wrapped up its 2023 outdoor regular season on Saturday at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium. In its first of two-straight meets in Baton Rouge, the Crimson Tide tallied nine top-five finishes, broke multiple PRs and made a jump in its all-time top-10 list.

Alabama started the single-day meet in the women’s hammer throw where Samantha Kunza (fourth), Taylor Gorum (fifth) and Chelsea Igberaese (eighth) all notched top-10 finishes. Later in the day, Gorum and Igberaese would also tally top-three finishes in the women’s discus, highlighted by a PR-breaking performance by Gorum (56.15m | 184-02), who now holds the third-farthest mark in program history.

On the men’s side, DeMarco Lemons (50.60m | 166-00) secured his fourth-place finish on his final attempt in the men’s discus. From there, UA’s long jump duo of Julian Collins (7.37m | 24-2.25) and Quincy Scott (7.18m | 23-6.75) tallied a third and fourth place finish for the Crimson Tide. Collins needed only his first of six jumps to secure the bronze finish.

Later in the day, women’s javelin thrower Hailey Poole recorded a second-place finish of 48.59 meters (159-5) before men’s triple jumper Christian Edwards concluded Alabama’s action in the Bayou with another second-place finish. Edwards secured the placement on his third attempt of the event.

“We closed out the regular season with some good performances, including multiple top-10 finishes and new PRs – but overall, we must get better in order to reach our potential for this season. Heading into the championship season, we have to use these next few days to regroup, recharge and fix our mistakes. One of the pluses from this weekend is the experience we gained in Baton Rouge, which should aid us when we return in a couple of weeks and open the postseason with the SEC Championships.”
