Rocky Hansen became the 18th member of the exclusive high school sub-four club on Sunday, running 3:59.56 to win the mile against collegiate athletes at the Virginia High Performance Meet.

Hansen becomes the first North Carolina prep to accomplish the feat. The senior at Christ School NC has been to the doorstep of the four-minute barrier several times already. Eleven months ago, Hansen ran 4:00.76 for the mile at the RunningLane Track Championships in Alabama.

This winter, Hansen won the New Balance Grand Prix high school mile in 4:01.11 and then finished fifth in the ‘B’ pro mile at the Millrose Games in 4:00.84.

Hansen’s persistence finally paid off.

On Friday, Hansen showed his fitness yet again when he anchored the Christ School distance medley relay to a Penn Relays title at Franklin Field. Hansen split 4:05.65 and was later named the High School Boy Athlete of the Meet for relay events.

On April 8, he ran 8:34.78 for 3,200 meters at the Arcadia Invitational.

Sunday’s meet in Charlottesville, Va. turned out to be the perfect time check the sub-four box.

Hansen was one of three runners to break four on Sunday, and he got to the line ahead of Virginia’s Jack Eliason (3:59.64) and Virginia Tech’s Ben Nagel (3:59.96.).

Hansen, who has signed with Wake Forest, moved to No. 15 on the all-time list.
