LOS ANGELES – In its heated regular season finale, UCLA men’s track & field claimed victory over USC in its dual meet Sunday inside Drake Stadium. The Bruins competed well against the Trojan women but came up short in the final tally.
Both the men’s and women’s teams jumped out to a lead over their cross-town rivals after the early field events, but things tightened up heading into the afternoon. With 13 events of the 19 scheduled completed, UCLA men’s squad trailed 55-58 but had plenty of events left to secure the win. On the women’s side, through 11 of the 19 scheduled events, UCLA led 48-47 in a closely contested meet.
The men’s hurdlers, distance runners and throwers shined in their events to eventually clinch the victory for the Bruins. Emotions ran high in the men’s 4x400m relay – the final race of the day – as both teams received disqualifications for unsportsmanlike conduct after taunting and confronting one another at the conclusion of the event.
The Bruins got the final victory lap on the track in Drake Stadium after the results came in from the official scorers.
