Hokies prepare for ACC Outdoor Championships


BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams head to Raleigh, N.C. on Thursday, May 11 – Saturday, May 13 to compete at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

Hokies look to continue their strong performance from the ACC Indoor Championships winning both th men’s and women’s titles for a second consecutive year. The Virginia Tech men placed second at the 2022 Outdoor Championships winning two individual titles and the 4x100m relay (93 points). The women’s team had nine top-five individual finishers resulting in the team placing eighth with 54 points. 

Tech is looking for its fifth overall outdoor title having last won the conference meet in 2019. The women’s team last won the meet in 2017 with 124.5 points. 

 

VIRGINIA TECH IN THE RANKINGS

Women


Kenna Stimmel is looking to claim her second ACC pole vault title after winning the indoor championships with a height of 14′ 5.25″ (4.40m). Stimmel cleared the same height at the NCAA Indoor Championships finishing fourth. She ranks first in the ACC heading into the outdoor championships. Teammate Julia Fixsen ranks second in the vault followed by Hayley Horvath and Journey Gurley tied for sixth. 

Jumper Victoria Gorlova leads the ACC in the women’s triple jump with a season-best distance of 44′ 5.25″ (13.54m). Gorlova won her second straight indoor championship triple jump title in February with a mark of 43′ 0.25″ (13.11m).  Finishing second at the indoor championships, teammate Cierra Pyles is ranked third in the conference with a personal-best mark of 43′ 7.75″ (13.30m). 

Sara Killinen ranks first in the hammer throw with a season-best distance of 222′ 10″ (67.93m). Killinen placed fourth at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships throwing a personal-best distance of 233′ 0″ (71.02m). Rebecca Mammel and Barbora Stejfova sit fourth and fifth in the event. Mammel won the 2023 ACC indoor conference championships in the weight throw setting a meet record of 76′ 5″ (23.29m). 

Senior Essence Henderson will compete in two events this weekend, ranking fourth in shot put and fifth in discus. Henderson finished second in shot put at last years…
