Badgers in second after day one of Big Ten Championships


BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind four scorers, the Wisconsin women’s track and field team currently sits second in the team standings at the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships after day one. The Badgers picked up 13 points in the hammer throw and five points in the 10,000 meters to tally 18 points after three finals on day one. Nebraska leads the team race with 46 points while Michigan and Ohio State are tied for third place with 16 points.

UW scorers in hammer and 10,000 meters

Wisconsin scored two places in the hammer as Chloe Lindeman led the Badgers with a runner-up finish. The redshirt junior recorded a throw of 205 feet, 8 inches to finish just three inches out of first place. Redshirt senior Olivia Roberts placed fourth, tossing the hammer 204-1. The pair continues to be ranked first and second, respectively, all-time at UW.

UW scored five points in the 10,000 meters thanks to back-to-back finishers. Senior Alexa Westley led the way, crossing the line in 34 minutes, 58.79 seconds for a sixth-place finish, while senior Samantha Stieve finished seventh in 35:09.25.

Two qualify for finals

Wisconsin qualified two athletes for Sunday’s finals. 

In the 1500 meters, redshirt sophomore Emma Watcke and senior Madison Mooney advanced to Sunday’s final. Watcke finished fifth in her heat in 4:20.06 to qualify with the eighth fastest time. Mooney earned an automatic qualifying spot after placing second in her heat in 4:22.72.

Badgers in scoring position in heptathlon

One Badger is in scoring position after day one of the heptathlon. Senior Mackenzie Heyroth currently sits in fifth place with 3,239 points while freshman Shaina Zinter is in 11th place with 3,020 points.

Heyroth recorded two personal bests, winning the shot put with a distance of 42-8 ¼ and taking 11th in the 200 meters in 26.07. She also finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.12 and eighth in the high jump, clearing 5-3 ¾. 

Zinter also picked up a personal best on day one, placing fourth in the 200-meters in 44.94.  She also finished seventh in the shot put with a distance of 36-4 ¼ and ninth in the 100-meter hurdles crossing in 14.51. 

Up Next

Day two of the Big Ten Championships kicks off at 10:30 a.m. CT on Saturday with the second day of the heptathlon. Field and running events begin at 3:30 p.m. CT.
