Virginia Men, Virginia Tech Women Lead ACC Track & Field After Day 2


RALEIGH, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Virginia men and Virginia Tech women lead the team scoring following the conclusion of action on Friday at the 2023 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at NC State’s Paul Derr Track.
 
 With nine events in the books on both sides, the Cavalier men have taken over the top spot in the standings with 55.5 team points, followed by Notre Dame with 39, Duke at 37, and North Carolina at 34.5.
 
The Virginia Tech women lead by a bit larger margin as they attempt to sweep the ACC indoor and outdoor titles for 2022-23. The Hokies concluded Friday’s session with 69.5 team points, followed by NC State with 44 and Duke with 43. Notre Dame, buoyed by a sweep of the top three spots in the women’s steeplechase – jumped to fourth place with 39.
 
Saturday’s decisive closing session will feature finals in 20 running events (10 men’s, 10 women’s) as well as the men’s and women’s high jump, and the men’s and women’s discus throw.
 
Due to the likelihood of increasing thunderstorms and lightning later in the evening on Saturday, the schedule for the final session at NC State’s Paul Derr Track has been changed.
 
The first field events will begin on Saturday at noon – two hours earlier than originally scheduled – with running events now set to begin at 3 p.m. The revised schedule is as follows:

Women’s High Jump – Noon
Women’s Discus – 3 p.m.
Men’s High Jump – 3 p.m.
 
Running Events will now begin at 3 p.m.
 
Friday action
Seven field events (four women’s, three men’s) were completed on Friday, along with prelims in eight running events. The women’s and men’s steeplechase concluded the session, shortly before 9 p.m.
 
The women’s 3000-meter steeplechase featured a Notre Dame podium sweep as Oliva Markezich placed first with a meet and facility record time of 9:40.65 and was followed by teammates Katie Thronson (9:44.11) and Sophie Novak (9:48.83).
 
The men’s steeplechase proved a huge boost to first-place Virginia, as Nathan Mountain won the event with a personal best of 8:32.05 and was closely followed by teammate Derek Johnson for a 1-2 Cavalier finish.
