Bruins See Two Podium Finishes, 18 Qualifiers for Sunday’s Finals after Day Two

WALNUT, Calif. – Peter Herold and Mayyi Mahama claimed top-three finishes in their respective final events Saturday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium. The two Bruins competed in the singular final events Saturday during the second day of the 2023 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships hosted by Mt. San Antonio College.

Mahama crushed her previous personal best in the women’s hammer throw by nearly three meters, skyrocketing to second all-time for the Bruins in the throwing event. Mahama’s 68.38m (224-4) placed her third in the Conference on Saturday.

Herold’s 8:42.24 earned him second place in the 3000m steeplechase event, the penultimate race of the evening.

The Bruins also advanced 12 additional runners and hurdlers to Sunday’s final events; UCLA had already earned six spots in the respective finals for Friday’s races.

Liam Anderson and Aiden Lieb were the first to qualify for Sunday in the men’s 110m hurdles. Jada Jones and Yanla Ndjip-Nyemeck wanted to mimic the men’s team, qualifying the duo for the women’s 100m hurdle final.

UCLA will take up four of the nine spots in the men’s 400m final; Cameron Reynolds, Myles Misener-Daley, Willington Wright and Antonie Nortje all qualified for the Bruins. Reynolds, Wright and Nortje all competed in the same heat – only the top runner from each of the four heats automatically qualified in the race.

Aly Conyers ran a 53.10 in the women’s 400m prelims to secure her spot in the final on Sunday. Naomi Johnson earned an automatic qualifier in the 100m dash after placing second in her heat with a 11.49.

Jai Dawson and Kai Wingo were the final two qualifiers for UCLA, running in the 800m for the Bruins.

The Bruin men saw point-scorers in the long jump (Jalyn Jackson), shot put (Michael Pinckney) and high jump (Aaron Kim) on Saturday; the women scored big in the hammer throw behind Mahama’s bronze placement and added points in the shot put (Natalie Ramirez), pole vault (Ka’Leila Abrille, Katerina Adamiec) and 3000m steeplechase (Emma Tavella).
UCLA returns to action in the men’s discus final at 11 a.m. to start Sunday’s finale at the Pac-12 Championships.
