Badgers finish sixth at Big Ten Championships


BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Wisconsin women’s track and field team finished sixth at the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships on Sunday. The Badgers scored 56.5 points, Michigan won the championship with 139 points while Ohio State finished second with 123 points.

“On the women’s side, our big players did a good job – Josie Schaefer, Destiny Huven and Maddie Mooney making two finals. There was some really good stuff that we can build on for next year” said director of Track & Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne

Wisconsin scored in five events on the final day of competition, including two scorers in the discus.

Schaefer medals 

Graduate student Josie Schaefer earned a medal for the second time this weekend as she claimed a silver medal in the discus throw with a distance of 185 feet and 6 inches. Redshirt freshman Danni Langseth also competed in the event, finishing sixth at 166-5.

Other UW Scorers 

Wisconsin picked up points in the 100-meter hurdles as Destiny Huven finished fourth, crossing in 13.01.

Madison Mooney and Danielle Bellino also picked up points in the 800 meters. Mooney crossed in 2:08.34 for seventh-place while Bellino finished eighth in 2:08.35. Mooney also qualified for the final of the 1500 meters, finishing ninth in 4:24.19. 

Redshirt senior Samantha Stieve scored for the second time this weekend, finishing sixth in the 5,000 meters in 16:18.16.  

Sophomore Julia Moore was the final Badger to score points as she finished seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-11 ¾.

Qualifiers travel to Sacramento, California, for the NCAA West Preliminary Round on May 24-27.
