ROSEMONT, Ill. — University of Michigan director of track and field and cross country Kevin Sullivan was awarded Big Ten Coach of the year, while Ziyah Holman was named the Athlete of the Big Ten Championships as the conference announced its postseason honors on Friday (May 19). The pair earned the awards after the Wolverines women’s track and field team captured its second Big Ten outdoor championship last Sunday (May 14).

Holman had a stellar series of performances during the Big Ten Championships, winning the 400 meters with a Big Ten meet and program-record time of 50.90 seconds and claiming second place in the 200 meters in a program-record 23.08. The junior also was part of the 4×400- and 4×100-meter relay teams, which finished second (3:30.52) and third, respectively. Running the final leg of the school-record setting 4×400, Holman’s time of 50.37 was even faster than the record-setting 400-meter performance she put on less than an hour prior. In total, Holman finished the championships with four medals, three school records and one Big Ten meet record.

Sullivan earned his first career women’s outdoor track and field Coach of the Year honor, which comes on the heels of his winning the award in the indoor season in February. Under Sullivan, five women won individual Big Ten titles — Holman, 400m; Aurora Rynda, 800m; Corinne Jemison, discus; Savannah Sutherland, 400-meter hurdles; and Aasia Laurencin, 100-meter hurdles). Sunday’s win marked the sixth time in program history that the women’s team has won both the indoor and outdoor Big Ten Championships in the same season.

Ericka VanderLende was named Michigan’s Sportsmanship Award honoree.
