Morgantown’s Irene Riggs Wins Distance Triple In Final West Virginia State Meet

In her final track meet representing Morgantown High, distance standout Irene Riggs made sure it was a memorable one. At the West Virginia Outdoor State High School Track and Field Championships held at UC Stadium at Laidley Field on Friday and Saturday, Riggs won three individual titles to guide Morgantown to a share of the Class AAA state title. Morgantown tied with Jefferson, both teams finishing with 111 points. 

“Just participating in the West Virginia state meet means so much to me,” Riggs said. “My teammates, peers, and people from all over the state lend me so much support – which I am incredibly grateful for.”

Riggs, who will run for Stanford in the fall, won the 3,200 on Friday, resetting her own state meet record in a time of 10 minutes, 10.02 seconds. Teammates Amelia Summers (10:56.58) and Madeline Gump (10:58.98) placed second and third, as Morgantown dominated the event with 24 points. On Saturday, Riggs claimed the 1,600 (4:50.25) and 800 (2:14.68) titles to complete a distance triple. 

“Having the opportunity to race the 3200, 1600 and 800 is so special in that I can put forth my best effort to secure points for my team,” Riggs said. “Leaving with another team state title is the perfect way to cap off my high school track season.”

Riggs, who ranks US#3 in the the 3,200 (9:52.66) will race at the Brooks PR in June in Seattle, an event last year she clocked 9:50.72, U.S. No. 2 all-time.  

The Jefferson girls won the 4×400 relay (4:04.83), the last event of the day, and those 10 points put them into a tie Morgantown. 

In boys Class AAA, Huntington won the team championship with 98.50 points. 

On the track, Jefferson’s Keyshawn Robinson, a junior, claimed the 100 (10.70), 200 (21.52) and 400 (48.26).

Teammate Caleb Gottlieb won the 800 in a meet record time of 1:53.69.

University’s Drew Zundell won the 1,600 in a class record of 4:08.80. Sophomore Ty Steorts of Hurricane won the 3,200 meters in 9:04.77.

Class AA

The Winfield girls defended their Class AA title scoring an impressive 150 points. Senior Rachael Withrow led the way winning the 1,600 in a meet record time of 5:07.33. She also won the 3,200 (11:02.98) and placed fifth in the 800. 

The Point Pleasant boys tallied 82.33 points to edge out Keyser 79 points for the team crown. Senior Cody Schultz claimed the discus (176-10)…
