SACRAMENTO – The University of Colorado’s track and field program heads to the capitol of California for the NCAA West Preliminaries this week. The contingent will compete Wednesday through Saturday for a chance to advance to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA Championships.
The NCAA conducts two regionals (East and West) with 48 student-athletes entered into each event. The top 12 finishers at each regional will earn a berth at the NCAA Div. I Outdoor Championships which will take place in Austin, Texas on June 7-10.
The men will be first out of the starting blocks on Wednesday. Matt Ward will get things started for Colorado in the men’s hammer at 11 a.m. MT.
The track events will take place later in the evening starting with Isaiah Givens in the 1500-meters. The duo of James Milholen and Tyler Williams will run in the 400-meters, while Garrett Nelson will compete in the 400-meter hurdles. The night will close with the trio of Charlie Sweeney, Jace Aschbrenner and Ethan Powell in the 10,000-meters.
Amanda Opp will start the women’s side off in Thursday’s hammer throw (11 a.m. MT). Jada Green will represent the Black & Gold in the javelin and Avery McMullen will conclude Thursday’s field events in the long jump.
McMullen will get things going on the track with the 100-meter hurdles (7 p.m. MT). Bailey Hertenstein will follow in the 1500-meters. Thursday continues for the Buffs with Abbey Glynn running in the 400-meter hurdles and wraps up with India Johnson in the 10,000-meters.
Friday will feature the qualifiers from Wednesday as well as the quarterfinals in the men’s steeplechase, 4×400 relay and the semifinals of the 5000-meters. Saturday is back to the women with the high jump, Thursday’s qualifiers, the 4×400 relay and the 5000-meters.
The meet is scheduled to be live-streamed on ESPN+ but is limited to events occurring inside the stadium. Throwing events will not be streamed. Wednesday and Friday’s coverage will start at 7 p.m. MT. Friday and Saturday’s stream will start at 6 p.m. MT.
