Hokies head to Jacksonville for NCAA East Prelims


BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams are set to compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 24 – 27 at Hodges Stadium.

The top 12 athletes in each event quarterfinal, plus the top 12 from the West Preliminary Rounds, will advance to the semifinal and final rounds of the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas (June 7-10) at Mike A. Myers Stadium.  Athletes in the throws, long jump, and triple jump will get three attempt each with the top 12 moving on to the Championships. High jump and pole vault will continue competing until only 12 athletes remain. 

The men’s team will compete Wednesday and Friday, with the women going Thursday and Saturday.

2023 ACC outdoor champions Julia Fixsen (pole vault), Rebecca Mammel (hammer), Antonio Lopez Segura (5000m), and Nick Plant (800m) are set to compete at the East Prelims. 

At the 2022 East Prelims, Julia Fixsen, Essence Henderson, Sara Killinen, Khalil Bedoui, and Chauncey Chambers advanced to the finals where Killinen finished fourth in the hammer throw with a personal-best distance of 233′ 0″ (71.02m). Henderson placed first at the prelims breaking her school record in the discus with a throw of 193′ 0″ (58.83m).
