Hinchliffe and McAlvey qualify for Friday quarterfinals, Cougs open NCAA West First Round

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jared McAlvey (400m hurdles) and Louie Hinchliffe (100m dash) each posted top-three finishes to automatically qualify for Friday’s quarterfinal rounds in their respective events as Washington State men’s track and field opened the 2023 NCAA West Preliminary Round Wednesday at Hornet Stadium.

Hinchliffe closed his first-career race at the NCAA West Preliminary with a strong final push to narrowly edge out USC’s Brendon Stewart for the third and final automatic qualifying spot in the opening heat at an official time of 10.31.

McAlvey was out in front of his 400m hurdles heat from start to finish as the junior from Walla Walla cruised to his first-career trip to the national quarterfinal round with a time of 51.07 to finish second in the third heat.

Junior thrower Josh Farr opened the day for the Cougs and finished with a final mark of 58.42m to place 10th in the first of two flights in the men’s javelin. Fellow thrower Ronald Grueso Mosquera saw his strong sophomore campaign in the men’s shot put come to a close with a 23rd overall finish after a mark of 18.29m to begin his week on day one. The sophomore from Columbia will be back in action Friday in the men’s discus.
