Polychroniou And Stevenson Earn Their Way To The 2023 NCAA Track & Field Championships

Nikolaos Polychroniou in the hammer throw and JC Stevenson in the long jump advanced to the 2023 NCAA Track & Field Championships and eight Trojan men advanced to event quarterfinals during the first day of the 2023 Men’s NCAA West Preliminary Rounds held at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calf.  today (May 24).  In the field events, the top 12 finishers advanced to the NCAA Championships, while you needed to finish in the top 24 in the running events, to advance to the quarterfinals in two days.  On Friday, the top 12 in each event will punch their ticket to nationals.  The 2023 NCAA Track & Field Championships will be held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas from June 7-10.

  • Nikolaos Polychroniou began the day by placing third in the hammer throw with a best mark of 234-1 (71.34m) to earn his way to the NCAA Championships in the event.  When you factor in the results from the East Preliminary Rounds, Polychroniou had the fourth-farthest throw among the qualifiers.  Christian Johnson had a best throw of 214-4 (65.34m) and finished 18th.
  • JC Stevenson had a best long jump of 25-1.75/7.66m (+0.6) to finish 10th on the day and advance to the NCAA Championships in the event.  Johnny Brackins Jr. had a best jump of 24-9.00/7.54m (+1.1) to finish 17th.  That jump would have placed 10th in the East Preliminary Rounds.
  • Tade Ojora and Brackins Jr. both advanced to the NCAA 110m hurdles quarterfinal on Friday, finishing third and seventh respectively on time.  The top three from each heat, plus the next six fastest times would advance to Friday’s NCAA quarterfinal.  Ojora won his heat with a time of 13.58 (+1.3) to automatically advance.  Brackins Jr. took second in his heat with a time of 13.69 (-0.6) to also automatically advance.
  • Brendon Stewart and Chris Borzor both advanced to the men’s 100m dash quarterfinal on Friday.  Stewart placed fourth in his heat with a time of 10.34 (+0.8), but qualified as the second-fastest non-automatic qualifier.  Borzor placed third in his heat with a time of 10.41 (-0.8) to automatically advance.
  • William Jones advanced to the 400m quarterfinal on Friday by winning his heat with a time of 45.26.  His time was the second-fastest among the qualifiers.  Including the East Preliminary Rounds, he had the second-fastest…
