Five Bruins Moving on after Day Two at NCAA Outdoor Prelims

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The second day of the 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Regional concluded with five more Bruins advancing in competition.

The women kicked off action on Thursday, securing two spots at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. In the hammer throw, Mayyi Mahama qualified by recording a mark of 66.55m (218-4), finishing fifth overall. Federica Botter also qualified in the javelin, throwing 54.17m (178-8) and finishing 10th overall.

Yanla Ndjip-Nyemack finished second in the fifth heat of the women’s 100m hurdles, automatically clinching a spot in Saturday’s quarterfinals. The result was a personal best (12.99) and also the seventh fastest time for the event in UCLA history, moving past Jackie Joyner-Kersee (13.07). Ndjip-Nyemack’s previous personal best (13.07) was also 10th on UCLA’s all-time list, set on April 30.

Mia Barnett won her heat in the 1500m on Thursday night, setting a personal best of 4:09:30 and qualifying for the quarterfinals. It is the second-fastest time in UCLA history, beating Barnett’s own all-time top 10 record in the event (4:10:23). It is also the fastest time in NCAA First Round history, set previously in 2021’s East regional by Amaris Tyynismaa of University of Alabama (4:09.48).

In the 800m event, Rose Pittman ran 2:06.04, earning automatic qualification for the quarterfinals after finishing second in her heat. Pittman made a huge kick in the final 100 meters of the race, passing four runners down the stretch.
