In front of a hometown crowd Naugatuck swept both boys and girls titles at the Naugatuck Valley League Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday afternoon. The boys defeated Woodland by a score of 132-98 with Waterbury Career Academy taking third only five points behind. The Lady Greyhounds had an even more impressive victory scoring 181.5 to runner-up Woodland with 138.5. Watertown took 3rd with 114 points in the 14 team conference.

Girls Championship Highlights

If there was a meet MVP honored, it would have been awarded to Naugatuck freshman Lauren Kropo. She not only swept the three sprinting events, she broke meet records in all 3 events. Kropo won the 100m in 12.22, breaking Sacred Heart-Waterbury’s Kerryann Ashley’s eight year-old record by .21 seconds. Her time of 57.49 in the 400m beat Wolcott’s Jessica Weyman 19 year-old record by .59 second and she had enough gas in the tank to set another record in the 200m. Wilby’s Leniecia Ward 34 year-old meet record was taken down by the freshman who ran 25.05. Her PR of 24.97 from the Jake-Org meet is not only 1st in Class L, but the 2nd fastest time in CT this season.

You can’t win a championship with only three events and Naugatuck had three other winning performances. Senior Lauren Sonski took 2nd behind her teammate in the 400m and grabbed her own gold medal by taking the 800m in a time of 2:25.46. She then joined Leticia DoNascimento, Jezaiah Ramos and Ariana Acevedo to defend their title in the 4x400m with a time of 4:17.40.

Lily Jason was able to move up from 2nd last year to claim the triple jump with a distance of 35-0.5. The multi-talented sophomore was also able to claim silver medals in both hurdle races.

Also breaking meet records were Watertown and Kennedy’s girls 4x100m relay team. They both broke Wilby’s time of 50.43 with Watertown’s team of Alisa Sadiku, Alana Johnson, Besiana Dauti and Mallory Hannon crossing the line first combining to move the baton around in 50.43.

Other double winners included Seymour senior Peyton Dauphinais who set big PRs in both the 1600m (5:16.04) and 3200m (11:37.95) to remain undefeated against conference competition this year.

Watertown junior Autumn Bacik tied her lifetime bests in both the high jump (5-0) and pole vault (9-6), an event she won last year.

Sarah Cooley has become a triple threat in the throws. She won the shot put with a throw of…
