Gallatin, Helena Capital Tie For AA Boys Title; Helena Girls Win Again; Belgrade Freshman Wins Exciting 800

Freshman Wilson Schmidt of Belgrade climbed one of the highest mountains in Montana track on Saturday when he rushed past Bozeman’s Weston Brown to win the Class AA state title in the 800 meters in 1:51.31. 

Schmidt, who lost to Brown the previous week in the state qualifying divisional race, ran the fastest 800 in Montana in six years. Brown was second in a PR time of 1:51.82. 

Brown, who finished eighth at Nike Cross Nationals last December, won the 1,600 meters in 4:10.68 and the 3,200 meters in 9:11.76.

Gallatin won the 4×400 relay to gain the 10 points it needed to tie Helena Capital for the AA boys team championship. Nash Coley was part of the relay win and also won the 400 meters in 49.70 and the 300-meter hurdles in 38.47 seconds. 

Capital got there with a balanced effort that included Barrett Hageman’s second-place finish in the shot put and fourth place in the discus. Merek Mihelish finished second in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. 

Scott Klinker from Great Falls won the AA triple jump with 46-10.50. 

The Helena girls maintained their dominance as the top girls team in the state with 114 points. 

Logan Todorovich played a big role in the team victory with her 100 hurdles (14.97) and long jump (19-4.50) wins. Sister Madilyn Todorovich won the 300 hurdles, placed third in the 400, second in the 200 and fifth in the long jump. 

Helena freshman Hazel Bishop won the 400 meters in 58.57 and was fifth in the 200. 

Ave Roberts of Billings Skyview won the girls AA sprint titles, with 12.36 in the 100 and 25.76 in the 200. 

Alysa Keller of Billings West, a top-10 javelin thrower nationally, won the state title with 156-3. 

Ava Kellenberg won the AA triple jump with 39-4.75 and also took second in the long jump and eighth in the high jump. 

Corvallis swept the Class A titles with a pair of one-point margins. The boys edged Whitefish 84-83 and the girls beat Hamilton 63-62.

Junior Olivia Lewis led the girls team with her victory in the 400 with a state-leading time of 56.30, the 100 hurdles with 14.86, the 300 hurdles with 43.37. She was also in two relays that finished in the top four. 

Brooke Zetooney from Whitefish won the Class A 100 (12.35), 200 (25.32) and was second in the 400 (57.06).
