After three long days of action, the final CIAC Class meet was held Thursday afternoon at Willowbrook Park in New Britain. Windsor boys defended their Class MM title, defeating Rockville by a score of 98 – 64. Daniel Hand waited until the last event and leap frogged from third to first, claiming their first state title since 2010, holding off runner-up Hillhouse by a score of 64 -61.

Highlights from the Girls Class L Championship

Daniel Hand started off their day with disappointment when their top seeded 4x800m relay was disqualified when their lead-off runner stumbled at the line when she was supposed to remain motionless. The Tigers regrouped with Anna Vlieks claiming third in the 1600m and followed by winning a close battle in the 3200m. She led a pair of other runners who stuck with her the first seven laps as she put in a surge to outlast her rivals, winning in a time of 11.16.22.

Big points also came in the throws as first-year track athlete Redmond Sullivan won the shot and took second in the discus. The winning throw in the shot came on their last throw, reaching a distance of 39-11.5 with the 4 kilogram implement.

Julia Coric stole some big points in the 400m by taking second and Brooke Anderson finished in a tie for second in the high jump to claim seven more points. But coming down to the 4x400m, the Tigers were in third place, five points behind Bethel and three behind Hillhouse. The team of  Alice Agovino, Vivian Glaser, Michelle Jiang and Coric dropped five seconds from their season bests to claim their first state title in 13 years.

Hillhouse’s Leonaya Knox has already become the first girl in Connecticut history to break 14-seconds for the 100m hurdles when she ran 13.95 at the SCC East Sectional just over three weeks ago. Then, about 10 minutes later the Academic took third in the 100m. This was all after she came from behind to anchor her 4x100m relay team to a third place finish. She contributed 22 points to her team’s total all in less than one hour, with five separate races.
