Virginia 6A and 5A – Todd Stadium, Newport News
In girls 6A action, Western Branch senior Llyric Driscoll soared to a current U.S. #2 personal-best mark of 42-07.50 to win the girls triple jump title. Osbourn Park’s Lena Gooden claimed the long jump title (19-10.75), a U.S. top 25 mark, while Driscoll was second (19-01.75).
Grassfield’s Morgan Graham won the discus title with a throw of 159-08, a new meet record by eight feet.
South County sophomore Catalina Sanchious won the 100 (11.89) and 200 (24.15) and guided her team to a 6A repeat team title.
In the 6A field events, Potomac’s junior Ty’Heak Buie picked up a big personal-best as he soared to triple jump state title of 50-00.75, a current U.S. #11 mark. Teammate
Ronald Hewton was runner-up (47-10.50).
Grassfield Jordan Edwards set a meet record in the 6A shot (62-09), while Patriot scored 55 points to win the team title.
In 5A, Kecoughtan boys scored 58 points to win the program’s first-ever state title.
David Anderson won the discus (169-05) and shot put (59-08). The 4×400 relay (3:22.22) also claimed gold to seal the victory.
Nervier senior Jaydin Williams won the high jump, clearing 7-feet, tied for U.S. #7, setting a meet record.
Pryncess Jackson of Highland Springs won the 5A 100 hurdles (14.22), triple jump title (39-07.50) and was sixth in the 300 hurdles. In the 5A girls team race, Glen Allen tallied 66 points to win the state title as Elly Velasquez won the 3,200 (11:09.73) and was third in the 1,600.
Glen Allen’s Emily Romano won the pole vault (12-06).
4A & 3A – Liberty University (Lynchburg)
Madison Whyte had a record-setting final prep state meet as she led her team to a tie for the 4A team title. The Heritage senior set meet records in the 400 (53.79) and 200 (23.16) besting her own records. She also won the 100 (12.07). Her 400 time is a current U.S. top 15 time.
Tuscarora and Heritage both scored 62 points.
In field events, Tuscarora High’s Alysa Carrigan won the long jump, (18-6.25), triple jump (39-1) and set a meet record in the high jump (5-8).
In the distance events, Cassidy Scott of Fauquier won the 1,600 (4:53.74) and 800 (2:17.07).
The boys 4A team race came down the wire with Deep Creek scoring 52 points to beat out Courtland (51) and Blacksburg (49).
