AUSTIN, Texas – The final Husky student-athletes in any sport still in competition wrapped up their seasons today as the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships came to a close at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Sophie O’Sullivan and Kayley DeLay were the last two finalists for the Husky women’s team, both earning Second Team All-America finishes.
The women’s team finished with the 10.5 points scored on Thursday by pole vaulters Nastassja Campbell and Sara Borton.
The men’s meet concluded on Friday night, with the Huskies placing ninth for their first top-10 finish since 1979.
O’Sullivan had been on an incredible hot streak, but tonight the heat may have worn her down, as she couldn’t find the phenomenal form she showed in setting the School Record at West Prelims at 4:08.06 and then winning her semi two days again in another 4:09 time. With the temperature still hovering around 90-degrees tonight, O’Sullivan fell off the pack with two laps to go and was unable to rally back. She finished 12th in the final in 4:22.81 to earn Second Team All-America honors.
Kayley DeLay capped off her strong senior season, her one and only as a Dawg, with a 10th-place finish in the steeplechase final, picking up Second Team All-America. She posted a time of 9:56.63 in her final collegiate race. DeLay went to fourth in school history in the steeple this year.
Washington had a very unfortunate break on Friday when Ida Eikeng injured her ankle while warming up for the second event of the heptathlon. Rather than going for a third-straight top-five finish today, Eikeng had to withdraw from the competition yesterday.
