Hannah Stephenson of Farmington sorted through the crowded field on the first lap of the CIAC Girls 2k Steeplechase Championship today at Willowbrook Park in New Britain in her first steeplechase to earn the gold medal in 7:24.84.

What began as a duel with sophomore Kate Littler of Ledyard in heat 4 over the first few laps ended with a last lap surge that saw the senior Stephenson use her superior strength to give her the edge over each of the barriers. Littler finished as runner-up in her PR of 7:33.83 as bronze medalist Stephanie Burzynski of Somers finished in her PR of 7:37.89. In the very infrequently contested event Portland’s Lillian Tabellione finished 4th in her PR 7:42.35 as a pair of Guilford runners grabbed the final two medals with Clara Graham (7:43.50) and Alexa Suchy (7:43.69) in their personal bests.
