Cross country opens the fall season at the USF Invitational.
Bears To Feature At Five Meets This Fall
BERKELEY — California men’s and women’s cross country will traverse the West Coast to compete in five meets this fall.
The Golden Bears will continue a recent tradition by opening their 2023 campaign at the USF Invitational in Golden Gate Park on Sept. 1. Cal’s men took home a second-place team finish and placed three student-athletes in the top 10 at last year’s invitational, hosted by the Dons.
The Bears will then hit the road to Springfield, Oregon for the Bill Dellinger Invitational hosted by the Oregon Ducks on Sept. 22 before returning to their home state for Santa Clara’s Bronco Invitational on Oct. 15.
The postseason will commence with the Pac-12 Championships in Chambers Bay, Washington on Oct. 27, which will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. The Bears will then compete at the NCAA West Regionals on Nov. 11 in Sacramento.
Cal will return a majority of both the men’s and women’s team rosters in 2023. Claire Yerby will lead the women’s side following her impressive performance in 2022 when she broke her personal record in the 6,000-meter race twice, ending the season with a 20:57.5 personal best. Yerby enters the fall looking to build upon her track & field season this past spring, in which she posted a lifetime best in the indoor mile (4:42.52) to land in fourth-place on Cal’s all-time top 10 list.
On the men’s side, Garrett MacQuiddy will also aim to keep up his momentum from the 2023 track & field season when he made his first-ever appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 1500-meter run and logged the third-best indoor mile in Cal history with a 3:58.67 time — the first sub-four-minute mile for the Bears since 2016. In the 2022 cross country season, MacQUiddy notched his lifetime best in the 8,000-meter with a 24:22.6 finish at the UCR Invitational.
