Multi-Eventer Cole Whatley Earns First-Team Honors
California track & field received another round of good news Thursday as all five of its men’s College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District recipients advanced to Academic All-American status, as announced by the CSC. As it was with the women Wednesday, these are the first career Academic All-America titles for each of the Golden Bears’ honorees.
Â
Cole Whatley represents Cal on the first team after a season in which he competed in both the indoor heptathlon and outdoor decathlon while pursuing a master’s degree. He currently ranks sixth on the Bears’ heptathlon list with a total of 5,358 points and set seven personal bests on the season, contributing to a decathlon squad that ranked third in the nation.
Â
Ethan Bersley, who graduated with two degrees while running both track and cross country, was named to the second team after a season in which he reached his second straight NCAA West Region Cross Country Championships. Three Bears – Carrick Denker, Michael Gupta and Jono Pelusi – earned spots on the third team; Denker joined Bersley at the West Region Cross Country Championships, while Gupta posted the 10th-best hammer throw in program history on his way to a West Preliminary appearance and Pelusi earned his graduate degree while competing on Cal’s top-tier multis squad.
