It’s been a little over a year since Gary Moore Jr completed a historic sweep of the four throwing events in the CIAC Championships. Since then he has moved onto his freshman year at Baylor University where he has made steady improvement in his technique, building of his strength and learning how to better manage time as well as communication with coaches. His hard work and dedication to training paid off last Saturday at the USATF Under 20 Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene Oregon.

Moore took command early in the shot put where he punched his second throw of the series to a distance of 19.83m (65-0.75) that withstood the challenges by runner-up Michael Pinckney (UCLA) of 19-21m and Nicholas Godbehere (Cal) of 18.93. On Friday, Moore had placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 66.56m (218-4) in the event won by Pinckney with a mark of 67.03m (219-11). As a result of his winning performance in the shot put, Moore qualified to compete in the Pan American U20 Championships scheduled to be held August 4-6 in Mayaquez Puerto Rico.

Shea Greene, former Weston HS and current competitor for Princeton University, earned a silver medal in the U20 Javelin Championship with a personal best throw of 51-18m (167-11) in the event won by Evelyn Bliss with a toss of 51-79m (169-11). Greene is the current state record holder in the javelin with her mark of 161-6 set at the 2021 American JavFest.

Sydney Segalla, the 2022 State Open and New England 400m Champion while competing at Housatonic Valley Regional, finished fifth in the 400m Championship on Sunday in a personal best time of 52.58. Segalla, who just completed her freshman year at Boston College, finished strong in the race behind Christine Mallard who won in a time of 50.74. 

In the USATF Toyota Outdoor Championships held concurrently with the U20 Championships there were two other athletes with Connecticut ties who finished near the top in their events. 

Henry Wynne, former Staples HS and Virginia Cavalier, now competing for Brooks Beasts TC used a valiant effort in a closely contested fifth place finish in the 1500m final on Saturday with a time of 3:35.99 behind winner Yared Nuguse in 3:34.90. Wynne is the state Indoor 1000m record holder at 2:25.55 set at the 2013 New England Championships and the state Outdoor 1-mile record holder at 4:05.04 set at the 2013 adidas IAAF Diamond League Meet.
