GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Day one of World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary featured seven current and former Florida Gators competing in ten events over the course of Saturday’s schedule.
Former Gator Anna Hall competed in four of the seven heptathlon events, while other Gators including Will Claye, Thomas Mardal, Cory McGee, Jasmine Moore, Hakim Sani Brown and Ryan Willie all competed in preliminary rounds.
HALL LEADS IN HEPTATHLON
Through four events, Anna Hall holds sole possession of first place in the women’s heptathlon. She has accumulated 3998 points, earning over 800 points in each event.
The Colorado native began her day competing in the 100m hurdles where she placed 2nd, recording a time of 12.97 and earned 1129 points.
Shortly after, Hall ended the high jump tied for third with a leap of 1.83m. She earned 1016 points and reached the top spot in the heptathlon leaderboard, a position she would not surrender for the rest of the day.
Her most impressive performance on Saturday occurred in the shot put as she recorded three personal best throws, the furthest being 14.54m. This mark earned her a third-place finish in the event and an additional 830 points.
The fourth, and final, event of the women’s heptathlon on Saturday was the 200m. Hall impressed once again as she crossed the finish line in second place as she recorded a time of 23.56. She accumulated 1023 points in the process.
GATOR JUMPERS ADVANCE TO FINALS
Olympic medalist Will Claye and 2023 Bowerman finalist Jasmine Moore both advanced to the finals in their respective events Saturday.
Moore, who is also set to participate in the triple jump later this week, placed fifth in the long jump. Her best leap of 6.73m allows here to compete in the finals Sunday, August 20 at 10:55 a.m. ET.
Claye, a four-time World Athletics Championships medalist, qualified for the triple jump finals courtesy of a tenth place finish and 16.72m mark. The triple jump finals are set for Monday, August 21 at 1:40 p.m. ET.
DUO OF GATOR RUNNERS REACH SEMI-FINALS
Competing in the 1500m, Cory McGee placed fourth in her heat and nineteenth overall to advance to the semi-final round. Her time of 4:03.61 falls just three seconds short of her personal best which was set last year.
