BUDAPEST, Hungary – Mississippi State’s Marta Pen Freitas represented her home nation of Portugal in the women’s 1500m at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday morning.
The Portuguese national record holder clocked in at 4:07.74, finishing 10th in her heat. Only the top six in each grouping advanced to Sunday’s semifinal.
Starting from the outside, Pen Freitas was boxed out and held to the back of a pack that remained tightly grouped through the first three laps. Near the end of the third lap, she began to make a move to the outside, but was blocked in. With 300m to go, eight women broke away from the rest of the pack and elevated the pace.
While Pen Freitas was unable to cover the move by the leaders, she did make one final pass down the homestretch to finish 10th. Overall, her time put her in 42nd place across the four heats.
Mississippi State’s next representatives at the world championships will be Marco Arop and Navasky Anderson in the men’s 800m. That event gets underway on Tuesday, August 22 at 12:20 p.m. CT.
