Flanagan Goes Top-10 In Marathon At Worlds

BUDAPEST — The final two Huskies to compete at the World Championships ran 26 miles through the streets of Budapest this morning. UW alumni Linday Flanagan (’14) and Izzi Batt-Doyle (’19) competed in the women’s marathon, with Flanagan earning one of the best finishes of her long and distinguished career as she placed ninth overall.

Flanagan has finished in the top-10 at several of the major world marathons in her career, but today’s top-10 finish, in a time of 2:27.47, was one of the most gratifying, as she blew a kiss to the fans and celebrated coming down the homestretch. Flanagan was the top-finishing American today, and enjoyed a major improvement over her previous World Championships appearance, when she finished 37th six years ago in London.

Her ninth-place finish matched the ninth-place finish from incoming freshman Hana Moll in the pole vault for best finish by a Dawg at this year’s Worlds. Coincidentally, Moll was the youngest Husky at the meet at just 18 years old, while Flanagan is the elder stateswoman at 32.

Batt-Doyle ran her first Worlds marathon today and was 43rd overall for Australia in 2:37.53. Batt-Doyle is a relative newcomer to the distance.

Washington’s ten competitors at Worlds this year was by a wide margin the most in school history. No more than three athletes with Husky ties had ever competed in a single World Championships in the past.
