GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A trio of Florida Gators participated in three events on Saturday, August 26 at 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Competition began with Alida van Daalen in the qualifying round of the women’s shot put. Later Jevaughn Powell and Hakim Sani Brown represented Team Jamaica and Team Japan in the 4x400m and 4x100m relays, respectively.

VAN DAALEN COMPETES IN SHOT PUT
Competing in her first ever World Championship, rising sophomore Alida van Daalen participated in the women’s shot put as a member of Team Netherlands.
In the qualifying round, van Daalen placed 19th and recorded a mark of 17.93m (58’10”) to secure a top-20 finish in the world.
POWELL HELPS JAMAICA ADVANCE TO FINAL
On Saturday, Powell and Team Jamaica auto-qualified for the 4x400m final after a first place finish in the second 4x400m heat. Powell, who represented Jamaica in the 2022 World Championships, has a chance to win his second Worlds medal as Jamaica placed second in this event in 2022.
Powell ran the second leg of the 2023 relay and helped the team to a season best time of 2:59.82.
SANI BROWN ANCHORS TEAM JAPAN
Sani Brown, the former Gator, ran the final leg of Team Japan’s 4x100m relay which finished fifth at this World Championship competition. The group completed the event in a time of 37.83.
This fifth place finish comes four years after Sani Brown and Team Japan earned a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Doha.
