PRINCETON, N.J. – Rutgers cross country opens the 2023 season Friday, Sept. 1 at the New Jersey Jam on the campus of Princeton.

“I’m excited for today,” said head coach Matthew Jelley. “We are starting off at the Jersey Jam hosted by Princeton. We’ll race against many of the other New Jersey teams. The first meet is a measuring stick. For us, we are holding out some veterans but we have many newcomers and we’ll get to see where they are [in their performance]. It’s always exciting to see the hard work from the summer pay off.”

The Scarlet Knights are looking to build off their momentum from a year ago as a cross country program. In 2022, Rutgers enjoyed a solid cross country campaign, highlighted by an All-Mid Atlantic Region honor for Alex Carlson. The women’s squad finished eighth in the team standings at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. It was the best-ever finish for the women, topping their previous high mark of 10th in 2014 with three top-50 finishers.

The New Jersey Jam is the first of four regular season races before the Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wisconsin.
