PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men’s and women’s cross country squads began their 2023 season with a victory as both teams claimed first place at the Panther Invitational at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, PA Friday morning.
The Pitt men and women hosted in-state institutes Carnegie Mellon and Slippery Rock, as well as out-of-state colleges, Davis & Elkins and West Virginia Wesleyan. The Pitt men dominated the day with six runners in the top 10, as they posted a first-place finish with a team total of 17 points. Jack Miller and Luke Henseler crossed the finish line together with times of 14:20.0 and 14:20.2, respectively. Quintin Gatons collected third place with a time of 14:25.7. Peyton Geehrer and Luke Miller followed close behind in fifth and sixth place with times of 14:33.1 and 14:34.9. Finn Walsh was the sixth panther in the top 10, notching ninth place.
Freshmen Ethan Papa and Asa Gaspar had solid appearances as they ran unattached. Papa secured 17th place overall with a time of 14:56.9 and Gaspar followed in 19th place at 14:57.8.
The Pitt women captured first place with a team total of 20 points. Senior Emily Brown secured the individual 5K title with a time of 17:20.5. Winnie Incorvaia came in second place with a time of 17:23.2 while Caroline Rusinski posted a fifth-place overall finish of 17:33.8. Reagan Flannery finished strong in eighth place with a time of 17:42.1. Gianna Cagliola and Anna Cohen brought took 11th and 12th place with respective times of 17:52.6 and 17:56.9.
Freshmen Olivia Bufalini, Camy Kiser, and Ava Lane, who all ran unattached, provided strong performances finishing third, fourth, and tenth overall.
Next Friday, September 8, the Panthers will head to University Park, PA for the Henry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational.
