Peterson & Nahom Bring Home SEC Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After racing to individual wins at the Tennessee Cross Country Invitational and helping lead the Vols and Lady Vols to team victories, Eli Nahom and Chesney Peterson have been tabbed SEC Men’s Co-Runner of the Week and SEC Women’s Co-Freshman Runner of the Week, respectively.

Nahom’s win gave him back-to-back victories in Tennessee’s annual home meet after winning the Tennessee Cross Country Invitational in 2022. The New Milford, Connecticut, native led the men across the line with a finishing time of 19:53.3. The 16th-ranked and preseason SEC favorite Vols won Friday’s home contest with 24 points.

Peterson took the win last Friday in her collegiate debut, becoming the second Lady Vol in as many years to win their debut race. The Lady Vols dominated the meet with a perfect score of 15 points in the team standings, as five Tennessee runners crossed the finish line in a 0.5-second span. Peterson was first in 17:18.1 over the three-mile course.

Tennessee cross country is off from competition this weekend before traveling to Columbia, South Carolina, for the Gamecock Challenge on Friday, Sept. 15. The meet gives the Vols and Lady Vols a chance to preview this year’s SEC Championship course, as South Carolina is set to host the conference meet on Friday, Oct. 27.
