PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh cross country programs return to action at the 2023 Joe Piane Invitational, held at the Notre Dame Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., this Friday.
The meet will open up with the women’s 5,000 meter race at 10:30 am. The men’s five mile race will follow at 11:15 am. Spectator parking is located on Door Road in Lot D6 North/D6 South.
There will be seventeen teams competing on the women’s side, including ACC rivals Florida State, NC State, and host, Notre Dame. NC State and Notre Dame are currently ranked first and fourth in the National Coaches’ Poll. Florida State sits in the 28th spot, while non-conference foes Alabama (22nd) and Tulane (RV), will also be in action. At the 2022 Joe Piane Invitational, the women’s team finished fourth in the 5K race. Emily Brown and Sadie Carey-Tharp paced the pack, finishing 11th and 15th overall, with times of 17:25.2 and 17:33.3, respectively.
Eighteen teams are set to compete on the men’s side. Notre Dame (9th), NC State (21st), Alabama (27th), Montana State (28th), and Florida State (RV) are the top ranked men’s teams coming into the meet. Last time out in South Bend, Jack Miller finished 32nd in the five mile race with a time of 23:59.9. Luke Henseler finished 39th, crossing the line in 24:06.6.
On September 8, Pitt traveled to Penn State for the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, where the men finished in second place, led by Luke Henseler and Jack Miller’s top ten performances. The women finished in third place, with Winnie Incorvaia and Sadie Carey-Tharp both finishing in the top fifteen.
