PITTSBURGH – Women’s Cross Country’s Sadie Carey-Tharp and Men’s Soccer’s Joao Souza were named this week’s PNC Achievers of the week.
Senior Sadie Carey-Tharp recorded a personal best in the women’s 5K race at the Joe Piane Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame, last Friday. Her time of 16:56.1 secured 18th place en route to a sixth place team finish for the Panthers. As a result, Carey-Tharp and the Panthers jumped five places to #4 in the weekly USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Regional Poll, their best ranking in program history. The women’s squad looks to carry their momentum into the last regular season meet of the year at UVA Pre-Nationals next Saturday, October 14th.
Joao Souza had a strong week for the Panthers as they collected a 3-1 home victory over No. 19 Denver Monday behind his first career brace. He opened the scoring in the third minute of the match as he back heeled a ball into the left corner of the goal. Nearly ten minutes later, Souza would put the Panthers up two as he beat the keeper again by burying the ball into the left corner of the net. Souza now has three goals in his seven games played this season. The Panthers return home this Friday October 6th as they welcome the Virginia Tech Hokies to Ambrose Urbanic Field for an ACC battle.
