Cal Cross Country Toes The Line Saturday In Sunnyvale
BERKELEY – The California men’s and women’s cross country teams will toe the line for their final regular-season meet of 2023 at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara on Saturday, Oct. 14. The action at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale will kick off with the men’s 8,000-meter race at 8:45 a.m. PT. The women’s 6,000-meter run is scheduled to follow the men’s race at 9:30 a.m.
Last time out, the Golden Bears turned in three top-30 performances at the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 22. The men’s team took fifth place overall and saw Carrick Denker collect a new personal record (24:04.8), good for ninth place.
On the women’s side, Amelia Wardle-Stacey ran a collegiate-best 20:46.5 to take 23rd place overall. Claire Yerby also posted a personal best of 20:55.5 to clinch 30th place and lead the team to a seventh-place finish.
The Bears’ performance landed both the men’s and women’s squads ranked in 14th place in the West Region in the Week 3 USTFCCCA poll.
Cal returns to the Bronco Invitational following a women’s team 13th-place finish and a men’s team 15th-place finish at last year’s competition. Yerby headlined the Bears’ weekend in 2022, finishing the race nearly two full minutes quicker than her then-personal record. She ran the loop in 20:58 to set a personal best, which she has since broken twice.
Yerby will once again lead the women’s side this Saturday, alongside freshman standout Wardle-Stacey. Georgia McCorkle will also look to be one of Cal’s top scorers, having slotted her name into the Bears’ third scoring position in both meets this season.
Cal will also return its top-three finishers on the men’s side with Denker, John Sesteaga and Garrett MacQuiddy all expected to race.
Live results for both races will be available here.
