Virginia Tech places first at Hokie Open


BLACKSBURG – Sarah Leach led the Virginia Tech women’s cross country team to a first place finish at the Hokie Open on Friday, Nov. 3 crossing the finish line second with a personal-best 4k time of 14:06.3. 

The women’s team defeated James Madison 20-43, with Tech athletes placing second through sixth. Sophomore Star Price finished third setting a personal-best time in the 4k clocking in at  14:26.4. Chase Kappeler placed fourth with a time of 14:31.5, followed by Kenza Elakari in fifth (14:33.7) and Sophie Brzezinski in sixth (14:33.9). The women’s team remained undefeated at home during the 2023 season. 

Senior Alec Fleming scored second for the men’s team crossing the finish line with a personal-best 6k time of 18:19.7. Garrett Winters finished second for the Hokies clocking in a personal-best time of 18:20.5, scoring third. 

Will Jones scored sixth in the Hokies final home meet of the season with a personal-best time of 18:49.6. Bryce Reeburgh, and Colin Doran rounded out the Hokies’ score placing eighth (19:02.9) and ninth (19:08.9), respectively. 

The Hokies will next compete at the Southeast Regional on Nov. 10 in Spartanburg, S.C.
