Carlson Earns Top-10 Finish At Mid-Atlantic Regional

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Rutgers cross country closed out successful day at the 2023 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Friday, led behind a top-10 finish on the women’s side from Alex Carlson. The men’s team placed 11th out of 26, while the women finished 14th out of 27 at the Goodman Campus Course.

“Alex ran a strong and confident race as she earned the best finish by a Rutgers runner since 2002,” said head coach Matthew Jelley. “Rylee and Sofia also ran tough races helping the team with top 70 finishes. The men ran as a pack and secured their second-best finish at NCAA Regionals. They all did a tremendous job working together as all runners finished in the top 100.”

“I was proud of the men and women as we took some big steps this season,” added Jelley. “With most of the team back next year, it should make for an exciting future.”

Carlson placed 10th, running a time of 19:59.8 to lead Rutgers on the women’s side. Her finish was a 10-spot improvement over a year ago when she took 20th, and it also marked the best finish for a Scarlet Knight since 2003 when Julie Culley placed third. Carlson earned All-Mid Atlantic Region honors in back-to-back seasons with her performance.

Rylee Ferretti finished 65th with a time of 21:24.1, followed by Sofia Condron who took 70th in 21:27.4. The scoring on the women’s side was rounded out by Sophia Reich (107th, 21:58.1) and Lorena David (117th, 22:06.2).

The 11th-place team finish on the men’s side was the second-highest for the Scarlet Knights at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional and improved six spots from 2022.
Gavin Richards led the way on the men’s side as he finished 60th in 31:13.1. He was followed closely by Brian Pedretti in 63rd with a time of 31:14.8 and Jack Moran in 64th in 31:16.0. The trio was joined in the scoring totals by Zeb Hinker, who finished 70th with a time of 31:22.9 and Christopher Hill in 89th in 31:46.5.
