SEATTLE – Already the 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Coach of the Year, today Washington Director Maurica Powell was also named the USTFCCCA’s West Region Women’s Coach of the Year. It’s the first such honor for Powell, after she led the Huskies to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships this past Saturday.
At the national meet in Charlottesville, Va., the Dawgs outperformed their No. 10 ranking with a late charge, moving from 14th at the 5,000-meter split to 8th at the end of the 6,000-meter race. The Dawgs finished ahead of all other Pac-12 and West Region squads in the meet.
In her sixth season at Washington, Powell coached the Huskies to a thrilling two-point win at the Pac-12 Championships this season, the first for the Huskies since 2009. The eighth-place finish at NCAAs was the team’s best since 2011. It was the fifth Top-15 finish under Powell, and second Top-10 finish.
