SEATTLE –
While the start of the Dempsey Indoor season is still more than a month away, indoor track won’t wait for the new year. The Huskies have a group of seven distance runners ready to get a jump on things this Saturday at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Opener in Boston at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
The Colyear-Danville meet has turned into one of the main meets for qualifying to NCAA Indoors in the longer distance events, even with the indoor championships over three months away. Last year at this meet, 2023 grad Brian Fay broke the indoor school record in the 5,000-meters going 13:16.77.
Senior Eric Gibson will race the mile on Saturday, while Ronan McMahon-Staggs and Julia David-Smith will run the 3,000-meters, and three UW women will run the 5,000-meters: Perri Bockrath in her Husky debut, Haley Herberg, and India Weir. Samantha Friborg is also slated to race unattached in the women’s mile starting at 7:41 a.m.
Gibson’s mile will be up early as the men’s mile heats start at 8:07 a.m. Pacific time. Women’s 3,000-meters start at 10:55 a.m. followed by the men’s 3Ks at 12:05 p.m. and then the women’s 5,000-meter heats start at 1:25 p.m.
A couple Husky pro alumni will also be in the fields, as Sam Ellis is entered in the mile and Kieran Lumb is entered in the 3k, both competing for On Athletics.
