SEATTLE –
Another early season opportunity arrives for the Husky track team this weekend, as UW heads to Spokane for the Spokane Invitational. A group of more than twenty Dawgs will be at The Podium for their season openers on Saturday.
Action gets underway in Spokane at 9 a.m. in the field and at 10 a.m. on the track. This is the second December meet for the Huskies, as a small group of distance runners opened up last week in Boston. The group traveling this week features sprinters, jumpers, vaulters, multis, and one thrower.
NCAA runner-up Nastassja Campbell is entered in the women’s pole vault, which will be one of the big events of the meet to watch as she’s joined by the high school record-setting sister duo of Amanda and Hana Moll in their collegiate debuts, as well as returning Dawgs Delaney Ezeji-Okoye, Sarah Ferguson, and Avril Wilson.
Indoor First Team All-American Bruno Comin Pescador is entered in a trio of events to get his season going, joined by fellow Pac-12 decathlon scorer Jami Schlueter. Both are entered in the shot put and 60m hurdles. Comin Pescador is also in the pole vault and Schlueter is in the high jump along with Leland Lieberg.
Along with the Moll twins, freshmen making their collegiate debuts on Saturday will be Jonathan Frazier (60m hurdles, 400-meters); Kapiolani Coleman (60m hurdles, 400-meters); and Ava Washburn (long jump, triple jump).
Prestin Artis, fourth in the long jump at Pac-12s last year, opens his season on Saturday. Camille Duckett will also long jump for the women.
Returning men’s sprinters opening up include honorable mention All-American Jonathan Birchman, DMR All-American Daniel Gaik, West Prelims qualifier Matthew Wilkinson. The women have a big group of second year sprinters ready to test their early season fitness. That includes Ava McCumber Gandara, Sophia McHenry, Rhonda Newton, and Anna Terrell, along with junior Danielle Hunter.
Beatrice Asomaning is the one thrower making the trip, but she’s always one to watch in the weight throw, as she starts her year ranked No. 2 in school history.
After this weekend’s meet, the Huskies will be off until the start of the Dempsey home season on Jan. 13.
