Maryland Equals School Record For Graduation Success Rate For Third Year In Row

COLLEGE PARK, MD For the third year in a row, the University of Maryland Athletics department equaled its school record for institutional Graduation Success Rate with a mark of 88 percent. This marks the 14th consecutive year Maryland has recorded a mark above 80 percent. Maryland’s women’s athletics programs posted a 96 percent GSR.

The Graduation Success Rate is a four-year measure of freshmen and transfer student-athletes who entered the University of Maryland between 2013 and 2016. It does not penalize the institution for those student-athletes who transfer from Maryland in good academic standing. In addition, the GSR includes student-athletes who transfer into the institution and receive athletics aid.

“Congratulations to Terrapin Student-Athletes for their accomplishments at our prestigious institution,” said Brady Rourke, Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services and Director of the Gossett Student Athlete Center for Academic and Personal Excellence. “Graduation is the ultimate achievement and can unlock many opportunities. Our Gossett Student-Athlete Center (GSAC) staff takes great pride in guiding student-athletes toward programs which align with their passions and future goals. Matching our institutional record for the third consecutive year is a testament to the commitment to academic excellence of those student-athletes enrolled between 2013-16. Furthermore, signals to future student-athletes considering the University of Maryland that graduation remains of utmost importance in shaping their student-athlete experience.”

Five Maryland programs recorded a perfect 100 percent mark for the second consecutive year: women’s basketball, women’s cross country/track and field, women’s golf, softball and tennis. Nine teams posted marks of better than 90 percent, which is equal to or greater than the Division I National Average

The women’s basketball program has recorded a 100-percent mark in each of the last seven years.

Six programs improved their GSR from last year: baseball (+10), men’s golf (+11), men’s lacrosse (+4), wrestling (+11), gymnastics (+1), women’s lacrosse (+3).

Baseball’s 83 percent score matches their highest team score ever recorded and best since 2005. Men’s track and field’s score of 94 percent ties their team record set just last year and leads all Maryland men’s programs. Furthermore,…
