Badgers throwers, heptathletes shine on Friday


MADISON, Wis. — It was a busy day for the Badgers on Friday as the the UW men’s track and field team won two events at the Red Hawk Open in Ripon, Wisconsin, and competed on Day 1 of the Larry Wieczorek Invite at Iowa.

Badgers big up two wins in Ripon

Throwers were strong in Ripon, as Cole Hooper took home the weight throw with a heave of 62 feet, 11 1/4 inches (19.18m) and was followed by Jacob Bugella, Jake Schaefer and Nick Tomasovic in the 2-3-4 spots.

Kyle Clabough, the Badgers’ lone shot putter for the day, won the event with a throw of 52-11 1/2 (16.14m).

Heptathletes shine in Iowa

It was the first day of the heptathlon in Iowa. Sophomore Lucas Heyroth finished Day One in third place with 2,885 points after two top-three finishes. He placed second in the heptathlon shot put with a toss of 41-5 ½ (12.67m) and third in the long jump with a leap of 22-5 ¼ (6.87m). Quinn Lansill finished the day in eighth with 2,073 points, helped by a third-place finish in the shot put but the senior did not start the fourth event of the day, the heptathlon high jump.

The heptathlon continues tomorrow at 2:20 p.m. with the 60 hurdles. 

Redshirt junior Sam Amusan continued his strong season after finishing second in the 200 meters at 22.01. Freshman Andrew Casey also continued to shine on the track with a third-place finish in the 600 meters at 1:18.60. 

Finally, junior Hunter Cook placed third in the pole vault, measuring 16-4 ¾ (5.00m). The Ripon native set a personal best last week at the Wisconsin Midwest Invitational.

Up Next:

Track events begin tomorrow with the 800 meters at 1:30 p.m. Freshmen Bryce Stachewicz and JJ Williams will feature. Badgers will also  60-meter hurdle, 60-meter sprint, 400 meters, mile, triple jump, and 4×400 relay.
